KARACHI: During the current Asian Games 2023, Pakistan achieved notable triumphs in the tennis and shooting disciplines on Sunday.
Pakistan’s GM Bashir finished eighth in the games, which were taking place in Hangzhou, China, with 282 points and eight missed baskets.
Bashir scored 98 points in eight seconds, 97 in six seconds, and 97 in four seconds. To advance to the finals, Bashir must place in the top six.
On Monday (tomorrow), the second round of the qualification phase will take place.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 10m air rifle, Pakistan’s Mehak Fatima was unable to advance to the next round. She placed forty-first during the qualifying round.
Sarah Ibrahim and Ushna Sohail win significant matches in tennis.
Conversely, Pakistan made a great start in the singles and doubles tennis matches.
Ushna Sohail defeated Sumaya Tukhtaeva of Tajikistan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, in the women’s tennis singles category.
After a three-set match, Pakistani tennis player Sarah Ibrahim defeated Hind Almudahka of Qatar 6-2, 6(5)-7, 6-3.
Ibrahim easily won the opening set, 6-2, but Almudahka rallied to win the second set, which went over an hour, 7-6(5), after a close match.
After a 51-minute battle, the Pakistani player took the decisive set 6-3.
It was Pakistan’s day in tennis on Sunday. Following victories in the women’s singles division, Pakistan maintained its strong form and defeated Mongolia in the mixed doubles division in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
After losing to Khumoyon Sultanov of Uzbekistan in men’s singles, Pakistani pair Sarah Ibrahim and Aqeel Khan defeated Anand Gankhuyag and Khatansuikh Batbayar of Mongolia to win the tie in a mere 48 minutes.
Failures in the taekwondo and swimming sports
In the first round of men’s taekwondo, Nepal’s Bahadur Prem Limbu defeated Pakistan’s Aqdas Ullah Qadeer.
In the quarterfinal, Japanese competitor Yuiko Niwa defeated Pakistan’s Naila.
With 100.0 points at the end of the match, the Pakistani athlete advanced to the semi-final, but her opponent scored 104.6 points. Naila had earlier defeated Medhat Abrar Bukhari of Saudi Arabia in the Round of 16.
Muhammad Amaan Siddiqui and Muhammad Ahmed Durrani, two swimmers from Pakistan, were unable to advance to the following round.
Durrani set a new national record in the men’s 200-meter individual medley with a time of two minutes and 15.10 seconds, but he was unable to advance to the next round.
In the 200-meter individual medley, Pakistan’s previous best time was two minutes and 16.26 seconds.
Durrani lagged the final swimmer who advanced to the next round by 12 seconds. In the end, he came in at number 19 out of 27.
Amaan, on the other hand, finished in 22nd place with a time of two minutes and 18.65 seconds.
Durrani placed 33rd in the 100-meter freestyle heats, and Aman came in 37th.
